I know many of you have been waiting anxiously for a report on how the Leslie family is doing. Rachel and Chris send their heartfelt thanks for your prayers and your thoughts. They are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and concern for them and for Audrey.
They have spent time with Audrey regularly throughout yesterday and this morning. The hospital staff has been incredible about the access Rachel, Chris and Cooper have had to Audrey in the NICU.
Rachel is doing incredible. She is feeling very good and says that the pain from the c-section is easy compared to the pain she experienced during pregnancy. She even walked to NICU and back this morning!
It is incredibly hard for Rachel and Chris to leave Audrey when it is time to go back to her room. The desperate need and desire to be near her child is a pain all mothers and fathers can understand. Pray for their strength through this.
Audrey has many uncertainties surrounding her and what is to come. They are doing more genetic testing on her to gain clarity on some of her physical concerns. Some of those results will not be back for 3 weeks. And so, they wait.
They performed an ultrasound on Audrey’s head this morning that confirmed Dandy Walker Malformation.
Here is a good place for us all to place our prayers and energy: Audrey’s heart is performing better than expected. The defect is still there that will require surgery when she is bigger and stronger, but if the valve continues to hold its own the way it is, medicine will not be required to help it function. This all means that if all goes well with Audrey, Rachel and Chris will be able to hold Audrey and provide “kangaroo care” MUCH sooner than they had expected!
One obstacle to this is the port to which they provide Audrey nourishment, medicine & draw blood. Right now it is in her umbilical cord. This umbilical line is the way in which they are providing these necessary lifelines to her right now. It can only remain there for 7 days, then it must move to a location on either an arm or a leg – what they call a PICC line. With a PICC line, Rachel and Chris would be one step closer to holding Audrey. They have been trying to get a PICC line placed all day with no success. They have maxed out their opportunities to attempt a successful line and now have to let Audrey recover for about 3 days then reevaluate. Again, if they can successfully gain this new port of entry, it will be more likely that they can hold her at that point.
Here is the small miracle to pray for: Rachel and Chris desperately want to hold their daughter. They want more than anything to connect with her in this intimate way. Pray that Audrey’s heart stays the course and that she continues to fight this good fight. Pray that the doctors and nurses caring for Audrey in the Mercy NICU successfully place a new port as soon as possible so that in the days to come we can celebrate the small miracle of her parents getting to hold her for the first time.
Pray for this miracle, friends and family!
I will send another update as soon as I can. In the meantime, keep sending love and prayers to this beautiful family. They will need you all to stay strong through the journey.
